FLC Virtual Meeting- Successful and Engaging in Remote Era

Posted April 13, 2021 By: Reda El Alami

On April 6 – 8, 2021 Foresight Science & Technology attended the 2021 Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC) National Meeting which was held in a virtual format. In an increasingly connected, yet remote era the virtual conference was a pleasant and refreshing take on bringing minds together to learn interesting material from industry experts in an inviting format.

The three-day event consisted of several concurring sessions covering topics from ‘T2 for beginners’ to ‘Investment crowdfunding as a tool for T2 initiatives’ and aside from the occasional glitch, the event was well put together and the sessions were properly paced with ample time to answer key questions at the end from attendees.

Hearing from industry leaders and learning trends in specific regions of the country and various labs really made the content interesting as I was not aware that Iowa was seeking to diversify its investments from agriculture to high tech/fin tech; or that North Dakota was becoming a hub for tech funding. Hearing from investors that life science investments are on the rise due to the high risk and extremely high reward on the exit and learning that there is a finite market for tech buyers (ex: phones/computers) but everyone is at one time or another a buyer/user of life science technologies excites investors and compels them to consider riskier investments.

All things considered, the three-day virtual conference was very well done and I would gladly attend any other FLC virtual events in the future.

Hubble Space Telescope Book Now Available

Foresight Science & Technology is proud to announce the publishing of Not Yet Imagined: A Study of Hubble Space Telescope Operations.

This book is the outcome of a contract between NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and Foresight Science & Technology Inc. to gather archival materials and to produce a scholarly history of the post-launch era of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Project. The Foresight team, led by Dr. Christopher Gainor, collected documents and oral histories, creating an accessible archive to support and complement the scholarly history.

Not Yet Imagined documents the history of HST from its launch through its first 30 years of operation in space. It focuses on the interactions among the general public, astronomers, engineers, government officials, and members of Congress during that time. The decision-making behind the changes in Hubble’s instrument packages on servicing missions that made HST a model of supranational cooperation amongst scientists is chronicled, along with HST’s contributions to our knowledge about our solar system, our galaxy, and our universe. This book also covers the impact of HST and the images it produces on the public’s appreciation for the universe, and how HST has changed the ways astronomy is done.

This book is available in eBook reader and PDF formats here.

Foresight Receives USDA SBIR Phase I Award to Research Novel Peptides for Controlling Invasive Ants

Foresight Science & Technology, Inc. (Foresight) has received a Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture to develop a control method for imported fire ants using novel bioactive peptides. The ultimate objective of this research is to develop an effective, environmentally neutral bait formulation for bait stations, targeted primarily for household and small garden applications.

The peptides are covered in US Patent 9,771,393 B2. Bioactive Peptides Having Insecticide Activity, Choi and Vander Meer, issued Sep. 26, 2017; US Patent 10,017,538. Bioactive Peptides Having Insecticide Activity, Choi and Vander Meer, issued Jul. 10, 2018; and PCT WO 2016/0262388 A1 and WO 2018/0086790 A1. The research will be performed under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the USDA, Agricultural Research Service.

Foresight Receives Contract for EPA SBIR Support Program

Foresight Science & Technology has been awarded a multi-year contract to support the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Technical and Business Assistance (TABA) Program.

Through this contract, Foresight will provide direct assistance to Phase I small businesses funded by the EPA to develop environmental technologies and products critical to the mission of protecting human health and the environment. Foresight will provide custom commercialization consulting services and mentoring the small businesses to validate the markets to be served, help identify and overcome commercialization roadblocks, and to assist in identifying partnership opportunities.

Foresight looks forward to continue supporting the EPA SBIR Program!

Foresight Awarded NSF SBIR Grant to Research Taste Masking Agent

Foresight Science & Technology, Inc. (Foresight) has been awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant as part of a cooperative research development agreement (CRADA) with the USDA Agricultural Research Service, to conduct research and development (R&D) on an environmentally neutral product for control of red imported fire ants (RIFA). This project intends to establish a proof of concept for the use of taste masking agents that are already used in human and animal medications to mask the negative taste of an effective active ingredient for use in a pest ant bait station. The commercial impacts of the proposed activity will be to provide consumers and gardeners an effective, affordable, and environmentally responsible treatment for controlling RIFA as an alternative to existing chemical pesticides. The addressable market for the product is households and professional pest control service companies in the 14 infested states that currently use chemical pesticides to control RIFA, and additional households and service companies that would use bait stations if an organic solution was available.

“NSF is proud to support the technology of the future by thinking beyond incremental developments and funding the most creative, impactful ideas across all markets and areas of science and engineering,” said Andrea Belz, Division Director of the Division of Industrial Innovation and Partnerships at NSF. “With the support of our research funds, any deep technology startup or small business can guide basic science into meaningful solutions that address tremendous needs.”

“Foresight appreciates the support of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. As a long-time provider of commercialization services to SBIR funded companies, we recognize the importance of small businesses and their entrepreneurial efforts to bring innovative and important products and services to the marketplace. With funding from the NSF SBIR, Foresight is excited to be one of those small businesses.”Norton Kaplan, Foresight Science & Technology President & COO

About the National Science Foundation’s Small Business Programs: NSF SBIR/STTR program, also known as America’s Seed Fund powered by NSF, awards $200 million annually to startups and small businesses, transforming scientific discovery into products and services with commercial and societal impact. Startups working across almost all areas of science and technology can receive up to $1.75 million to support R&D, helping de-risk technology for commercial success. The NSF is an independent federal agency with a budget of about $8.1 billion that supports fundamental research and education across all fields of science and engineering. Small businesses with innovative science and technology solutions, and commercial potential are encouraged to apply. All proposals submitted to the NSF SBIR/STTR program undergo a rigorous merit-based review process. To learn more about the program, visit: https://seedfund.nsf.gov/
